The swim team has been working hard to prepare for the season to start.
“The girl’s team has been practicing for a little over two weeks, and the boys are on their first official week of practice,” Coach Michael Shannon said. “The goal for the team is improvement. To me, what’s most important, no matter what our wins and losses are, is that every time the kid gets out of the pool or the diver jumps off the board, they improve every single time.”
The girls’ team has been working on each of the individual strokes to improve.
“I’ve been preparing for the season by lifting and trying to work out daily, whether that’s another sport or going to the gym,” junior Emilia Rozzi said. “I’ve also been trying to drink a lot more water. My goal for the season is to drop times, of course, but also try to be a better swimmer, improve my technique, and try to be the best teammate I can be.”
The boys have started their first official week of practice for the actual season. They have been doing weights and preseason training to prepare.
“I want to go back to state this year, and I want to break my record again,” senior Jake Fincher said. “I would also like to break a relay record this year; that would be a big deal. As a team, I think the top five at sectionals and conferences would be possible, but there are definitely some big goals.”
There are a lot of young and new athletes on the team. From freshmen coming into their first high school season to students transferring from other schools, the adjustment can be hard for many students when they come into a close team and have to fit in.
“Logan is more difficult, a lot more actual practice, whereas previously it was more of a friendly get-together type thing,” said junior Anderson Woodhouse. “It is a lot stricter, and we get stuff done and push to improve. There are a bunch more things to mess around with, like snorkels and fins. This season, I want to push myself to be better than I was last year. I want to try to shoot for five thirty for my time, but faster is always better.”
Along with swim season, diving has also started. Diving can be a very mental sport.
“I’ve been preparing at practice as well as doing stretches and exercise to prepare my body,” junior Micah Rogers said. “My goal for this season is to make it to state; last year, advancing to regionals gave me a lot of confidence to move onto state this year.”
