Column: Disappointing Gun Control

There are more firearms than people in the United States according to the 2017 Small Arms Survey
The 2017 Small Arms Survey found that $393 million guns owned by U.S. citizens with that same year's population being only $326 million.

A cop’s cam footage became viral due to the cop’s decision to dump all of his rounds from his pistol into his patrol car, where a detained suspect was being held. In a miracle, the suspect did not catch even one bullet.

The cop decided to shoot because of a supposed gunshot that flew from the suspect, which was found to be an acorn hitting the top of his patrol car. This highlights why people are so afraid of guns. It is because there are so many.

On average, 327 people are shot every single day. In one year, that average is 177,345 people shot through the whole year. That is a horrifying statistic to have just in the United States without even accounting outside of it. This should be reason enough to be more selective with gun ownership.

But, for the government, it doesn’t seem so simple. The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution mentions being able to bear arms. However, why isn’t this amendment considered broken? Changing it would cause many more lives to be saved from gun violence.

However, there is one thing that would be in the way even if the government put more control around guns: the people around the United States who cannot accept change and who will die before they surrender their arms. There is no simple solution for those kinds of people as they would never be able to see the good that comes with harsher gun control for citizens and the government alike.

However, let us look at their point that they need their arms to defend themself. Let us look at England, which has almost barely any guns at all. Look at how in 2013, there were 5,800 handgun homicides in the U.S. while in the same year, Great Britain had less than 20 murders that involved a handgun. This almost makes the point that gun control can work. In the United Kingdom, most people don’t feel they need a firearm to defend themselves.

Why in the U.S. do we feel we need firearms? The reason is that other people have them, so we need them to defend ourselves. However, if gun control was stricter, most wouldn’t have to be afraid of being threatened by firearms as much, and most situations, like holdups, would be much harder to engage in because firearms constitute an immediate threat while if a hold-up with a handheld weapon like a knife would pose a less immediate threat.

Gun control would also help a lot of the police force. Most in the United Kingdom don’t carry firearms and use tasers and batons, which are a lot less lethal than firearms. This would lessen the possibility of cops killing or wounding suspects since there is no lethal trigger to be shot. This would instill a whole lot more trust in the police force as people aren’t as scared that they might get shot if they make a wrong move. The police force would most likely be more at ease since they would have a very low chance of encountering someone with a firearm. This is why stricter gun control is necessary. It would come with a world of benefits.
