The LHS Democrats and Leftists Club received the opportunity to meet face-to-face with two Logansport City Council members: Dave Morris and Suzy Wamsley.
In this meeting, there were several topics discussed, from their positions to future/current projects happening in Logansport. Wamsley and Morris are council-at-large members. They are the main individuals who decide where every dime is spent.
“I wanted to have a voice in Logansport,” Wamsley said.
Wamsley and Morris stated that their positions will only be held for two more years. However, each council member is elected for four years. They explained that during those four years, each member has enough time to plan new projects for the city.
Currently, there are seven city council members among five wards in Logansport. The Ward 1 council member is Cameron Austin, Ward 2 is BJ Cox, Ward 3 is Chris Howard, Ward 4 is Hayley Zinsmaster, and Ward 5 is Scott Pettie. The minimum requirement to run for a council member is residency years in Logansport. Morris represented Ward 1 for about eight years. He didn’t have to check his residency since he has lived in Ward 1 his entire life.
“You don’t even have to have a college degree. If you are old enough to vote, you are old enough to run,” Moriss said.
Logansport has been able to get new projects done with the help of some federal money. This federal money helps aid the city with fixing roads and building the new police station. The main person behind all the infrastructure is making a huge difference behind the scenes, with his new position.
“We got some good things coming up,” Wamsley said. “Logansport is making a lot of progress.”
Indicating the growth of migrants and how they work hard every day, Morris is trying to get them basic necessities.
“We are trying to push for giving people that aren’t legal citizens to get a driver’s license,” Morris said. “We are trying to get that changed in the state of Indiana.”
On the other hand, Suzy informs the club that people are known to come up to both her and Morris with concerns in their neighborhoods or about Logansport in general. They aren’t necessarily the ones in charge of changing certain things, so they proceed to go ahead and talk to different departments to solve the issue.
“You can go on the website,” Morris said. “Everyone’s email address is on there. You can contact your representative anytime you want.”
