Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across every single state, and over 70 different countries around the world. Habitat for Humanity is a Christian housing Ministry dedicated to making adequate, affordable shelters for people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership. Habitat for Humanity also works right here in Logansport, and is led by a volunteer board along with Executive Director Marissa Gordon and board president Scott Jewell.
“I joined at the request of a church member, I recognized that there were some skills I had that could benefit the group, and signed on to help move the organization forward to accomplish its mission,” Jewell said.
Jewell volunteered to be in the position and believes that the organization has good values.
“I don’t know that there’s a day to day description, but I help make sure things are filed correctly with the government and international organization, maintain the website, and help people organize upcoming activities to promote the organization,” Jewell said. “The reason I joined was because I believe we can make a difference for families in establishing a more permanent home.”
Habitat for Humanity is currently being developed and the organization is growing.
“Currently, it’s been a slow process of background work to get all of our cards in order, but I feel like once we get started building our first home this year, it’ll make an impact,” Gordon said. “It’ll especially impact the family who gets to be the proud homeowner of the home.”
Habitat for Humanity currently has a lot of goals.
“Our current goals are to complete a home build this year to get us back on track as an affiliate and with the community,” Gordon said. “ We hope in the upcoming months to acquire more land in town to help us build more homes for people that need them. We are also on the path to building “sweat equity” opportunities for families we partner with for home ownership. Sweat equity means the family will partner with us to build their home and take education classes and more so they fully learn what it means to be a homeowner and independent.”
Jewell feels like change can be made through this organization.
“People have value and need affordable housing.” Jewell said, “In the process, we desire to show them Jesus. Not only that but we want to provide good affordable housing to uplift the entire community.”
