Sad Beige is a trending style that has swept across major platforms like TikTok. It’s based on living in neutral colors that are considered rather depressing. It can come down to clothing, certain decorations or even just the whole house. There have been conflicts and controversy within the trend due to how far people take this ‘aesthetic’.

This aesthetic has caused a large amount of backlash on TikTok, with many calling it absurd and depressing. Some of the people that have adapted to this new style have started applying it to the things around them, which means even their children. The term ‘sad beige mom’ has roamed around the internet for around two years now, starting in 2023. It consists of turning toys, decorations and the clothes of their children into these neutral ‘depressing’ colors. They are known as ‘sad beige babies.’

There’s been a lot of drama on the case due to people worrying over the children’s health. The public believes that depriving kids of color at a young age can cause problems later on in life. It is known that color is linked to early brain development, helping it recognize emotions. Babies, however, don’t exactly understand colors early in their lives. They only go based on lighting, and color could actually be quite the strain for growing eyesight. The extreme brightness of colors can be overstimulating and stressful. So not only do neutral colors calm parents, but they can also help children in a neurological way.

Although people worry about children who are affected by the parents’ choice in lack of color, doctors say there isn’t really anything wrong with this trend. Technically speaking, parents raise their children differently in many ways. Color should be the last priority of a parent, especially since they’d already started to learn about them in school. Classrooms for younger students like preschoolers and kindergartners are typically brighter and hold a lot of colors. This can be a positive factor while learning for creative reasons, but it has also been seen as a negative, possibly being a distraction while learning major lessons.

A study shows that even Sad Beige moms have come out to say that neutral colors are a method of self-care. Being a parent is already challenging as it is, with all the tasks you have to do even though it’s worth it in the end. Neutral colors are seen as calming, a way to provide a steady and soothing atmosphere. At the time when a child is still growing into their eyesight, soft colors like beige, grays and light browns are all good for younger ages.

Many people have the opinion of never wanting to do that to their children, or living in such a ‘boring’ way. Sad beige or neutral colors aren’t harmful to kids or a person who decides to be a part of this aesthetic. It is simply just another way one person expresses themselves to others, even if people may find it depressing.
