“Flowers”, Miley Cyrus’s new song, is her first #1 song in a decade. Spotify has announced that “Flowers” has set a new all-time weekly streaming record: more than 100 million global streams in seven days.

Miley Cyrus released the first single, “Flowers,” off of her eighth studio album, “Endless Summer Vacation” on Jan. 13. Allegedly, the song was inspired by Cyrus’ relationship with actor Liam Hemsworth. One fact that supports this theory is the release date of the single being on Hemsworth’s birthday.

According to L’Officiel, Cyrus and Hemsworth were together off and on for 10 years after first meeting on the set of “The Last Song” in 2009. They both starred in the film and made their red carpet debut as a couple at the premiere in 2010. Cyrus and Hemsworth were engaged twice before they got married in Dec. 2018. They divorced eight months later in Aug. 2019, and the divorce was finalized in early 2020.

The lyrics in the chorus of “Flowers” have been compared to the lyrics of “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. The lyrics are mirrored in a way that portrays independence rather than the nostalgic feel of Mars’ breakup song.

Many fans of Miley have also found consolidation in Cyrus’ songs. Sophomore Kiara DeInnocentes believes that the song is refreshing to anyone who has gone through a breakup before.

“Personally, to me, it’s about dating yourself and loving yourself after a breakup,” DeInnocentes said. “It hits so hard because the feeling of being so lost after you were so emotionally dependent on someone who left and finally being able to make yourself happy again is so refreshing.”

This is not the first song by Cyrus to be about Hemsworth. Other songs written by Cyrus that are rumored to have been written about Hemsworth include hit songs “Wrecking Ball” and “Malibu.” According to Popbuzz, Cyrus didn’t write “Wrecking Ball” herself, however, it is still tied to her relationship with Hemsworth. It is believed that the lyrics are referring to her public 2013 break up with him, especially the lyrics in the first verse that reference not just walking away, but rather just living a lie.

“Malibu,” released in 2017, has been confirmed to be about Hemsworth. When the song was written, they were engaged to each other and living in Malibu. According to Insider, their Malibu home was burned down in the Woolsey fires that went through California. Cyrus revealed that without the fire, they might not have had the confidence to go through with the marriage.
