COVID-19 has had a large impact on everything over the past two years. Some areas have been more affected than others. One of the most affected areas has been competitive activities.

Quarantines have been rising, and teams have been affected greatly. Coaches have had to deal with having team members in and out. Team sports have had to deal with missing pieces of their puzzle.

“Dealing with COVID been more difficult this year, especially with competition season. We had to pull out of a competition because of the number of dancers in quarantine. We’ve also never been able to compete with our full team due to the rise in cases. This year is definitely teaching our team how to be adaptable,” dance coach Sarah Fisher said.

As a result of the rise in cases, coaches have seen more than just performance issues. A big problem many teams are facing is how they’re responding to the rise in cases. COVID-19 has hurt performance and confidence in athletes.

“I have seen a difference in the team in the past few weeks in both performance and attitude, which is totally understandable with the given circumstances. We (the coaching staff) just keep reminding the athletes how well they are doing. We remind them about their times from the beginning of the season and show them just how far they have improved and how they keep improving despite their setbacks,” swim coach Michael Shannon stated.

Athletes have gone through a lot with their team, every setback they experience together as well as every victory. These circumstances could bring a team closer than ever before or in some cases push them to be more estranged.

“I feel like this year we have grown further apart. A lot of us have been in and out of practices due to quarantines; it’s discouraging. As a team, we have missed so much because we haven’t been able to be together and bond as much as a whole,” junior swimmer Atticus Picardo said.

Even through all of the hard times, coaches are still encouraging their athletes to stay on top of everything. They know that it can be difficult but they still want to create a fun environment.

“Every day I remind the swimmers and divers, the scoreboard does not define them. What defines them is how they act when facing diversity. As long as you push yourself to be better than yesterday, you have already achieved what some have not. Keep working hard and let’s have some fun!” Shannon said.
