On March 29, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” was released to all movie enthusiasts’ excitement. It was succeeding its last release on March 31, 2021. The ratings for “The New Empire” were insanely great, averaging out to 4.6 stars out of 5. On March 29 fully with impulse I went to watch “The New Empire” and was astounded at how great it was. However, “The New Empire” has flaws along with its strengths.

“The New Empire” continues the last movie in the series “Godzilla vs Kong.” Its main premise is Kong surviving in Hollow Earth where he was dropped off at the end of the last movie it’s spectated for some time. It cuts to a girl in school drawing something that resembles the results of a seismogram. This girl was Kia, who Kong saved and is the last member of her tribe, therefore she can communicate with Kong. Fast forward a tad bit and Kong finds that he isn’t the last of his kind, but gets is not treated kindly by his relatives and gets hurt. He needs help and gets it from specifically the one and only giant: Kaju Godzilla. To not reveal too much about the plot, they team up to fight against a greater enemy.

While this isn’t too bad of a plot, the “Godzilla” franchise does reuse a lot of giants fighting and one winning without any real story being used as just a means to get the fight to happen. However, that is not to say simple movies like “Godzilla” can’t be successful due to not having some deeper meaning about society. The Godzilla and Kong movies are successful due to their simple plots and great cinematic scenes, but especially because of their masterfully made fight scenes that intrigue viewers in the fight and make them anticipate what will happen next. The only time I ever saw CGI that wasn’t a masterpiece was the effects used to create the giant child monkey. The CGI wasn’t straight garbage, it just didn’t compare to everything else. However, if you can move past this one CGI flaw, everything else is so much better. Overall, the CGI is beautifully done and makes you feel like you’re seeing it in real life, which really compliments the characters.

The main cast was definitely a strength in the movie. The Trapper cracked me up at some points and he was a perfect relief character in between the tense moments. The funniest moment was when they had such a tense moment with Kong getting out of Hollow Earth only to find out that he came up because his tooth was aching and the trapper came up on his flying rig to take out his tooth and implant a metal one. I found it hilarious especially when they kept cutting to Godzilla intensely swimming somewhere just to find out Kong wasn’t the target.

Overall “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is a definite watch for anyone who loves tense and cinematic scenes. If you have free time you should try this cinematic masterpiece.
