Martin Luther King Junior, a man of inspiration and legacy speaks his mind during an important press conference.

Many significant speeches were written and delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He supported nonviolent protest, civil rights, and equality for all people. His eloquent and potent comments continue to motivate people to work to improve the world to this day. It’s essential for the youth to learn of his great legacy.

“It’s important to learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. because of his impact on the world,”  eighth grader Martine Metelus said. “Without his movement, people of color most likely would still be oppressed.”

With the  MLK Jr. Essay Contest, the youth are expanding their knowledge of important issues and people who have a role in improving the future of our lives.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quotes are the basis for essays that middle and high school students can complete. A single school may submit up to five essays. For schools that are Department of Student Programs members, this competition is free. A fee of $10 per submitted essay will be assessed to non-member institutions. The entry deadline is Feb. 28.

Two age categories will receive awards: grades 6 through 8 and grades 9 through 12. First place wins $500, second place $300, and third place $200.

The quote used for this essay contest is “We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive,” King said. “He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.”
