Standing among other participants, freshman Rylee Zimmerman celebrates a fourth place finish in the vault at a Jan. 23 home meet. Zimmerman was also able to finish first in all-around, bars and beam.

On the morning of Feb. 25, the Lady Berries competed in sectionals at Lafayette Jeff. The Berries finished fourth overall with a score of 96.975, just missing out on going to regionals as a team.

Two members of the squad, however, did make it to regionals. Freshman Rylee Zimmerman finished fifth on the bars with a score of 8.0, while junior Lexi Brown took fourth on the beam with an 8.875 score.

“Ultimately, as a team, we had a fantastic day,” said junior Lexi Brown. “Sectional scores are usually difficult, but our performance today was strong, especially for a young team.”

It is encouraging to see a young team competing and setting personal records while giving it everything they have in tournament time. This gymnastics team has a promising future.

“I could not be more proud of this team this year,” head coach Kelly Platt said. “They progressively got better each day and always had fun in the gym.”

On Saturday, Mar. 4, Brown and Zimmerman are scheduled to participate in the IHSAA Valparaiso Regional.
