What Makes a Cast “Good” Enough?

A believable character comes from an actor with a strong sense of identity and connection

And the perfect cast of a film goes to… none of them! In fact, some successful films such as “The Super Mario Bros” (2023), “The Little Mermaid” (2023) and even the future live-action “Tangled” have received criticism for one of the most common reasons: the casting. For a film to be considered good, it needs to include precise and authentic casting. To know how to pick the right actor or actress, the quality of their identity, believability and connection need to be fairly matched to the vision the film project sets.

Identity

It’s easy to choose the “safe” option by picking a specific actor who excelled in one movie. But that doesn’t mean it will be good casting in another. Instead, pick actors who have a strong identification with their role that resembles similar qualities and personalities. For example, Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, who is a genius billionaire who fights crimes with advanced technology. In real life, Downey is an entrepreneur who founded the FootPrint Coalition that uses technology against climate change. Downey’s intelligence and growth mirror Stark’s traits, making the actor and role inseparable.

Believability

Acting is more than playing pretend; it’s how an actor’s performance and physical traits manage to fit the character and story. As part of the audience, I want to see and think about the character and its purpose. In Netflix’s series “Stranger Things,” Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven showed complex emotions and facial expressions despite being given a few lines. Her character, who’s been isolated and traumatized, was emotionally and physically affected. Brown committed to having a shaved head, a slouched posture, stiffness and childish behaviors. She demonstrated Eleven well, making it believable to understand her as a “real” person.

Connection

Once we can understand the cast, it may create an emotional bridge or a connection–not from fame but familiarity. Fans who love “The Amazing Spider-Man”(2012-2014) may recognize Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. He plays as a hero, but faces uncertainty, loneliness and other problems of life that people can relate to. Another great movie, “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016), is based on a true story that portrays a U.S Army medic who refuses to do violence because of his faith. Garfield had shown spiritual strength, as well as vulnerability, throughout the movie, teaching the audience about bravery and belief.

It’s nearly impossible to have the “perfect cast” because of people’s preferences and criticism. Yet, behind every memorable and relatable character is an actor and actress with real thoughts, feelings and struggles that still affect us today.
