Does Pineapple Belong on Pizza?

A strong topic it is, lets see who agrees to disagree….

Do you think pineapple goes on pizza? A very interesting topic for people to argue about, but everyone has taste buds. I love pineapple on my pizza. My favorite pizza is a pineapple pepperoni thin-crust pizza and ranch with from Papa John’s. It might sound gross, but the way the flavors melt in your mouth is like heaven. When you bite into it, you get that crunch from the crust. You get that sweetness from the pineapple, and the tanginess from the ranch.

“I’ve always liked pizza, but it’s never been a favorite food,” English teacher April Beene said. “For that reason, I like unusual pizzas–something like the chicken club pizza at Pizza Hut, or pizzas that use pesto or alfredo sauce instead of traditional sauce. I also prefer thin crust.”

Some people might say pineapples don’t belong on pizza because they are a fruit, but if that’s true then pizza sauce and tomatoes shouldn’t be on pizza because tomatoes are considered a fruit. Others only like pineapple on pizza if it is a tropical pizza like a ham and pineapple pizza or if it is warm out.

“It doesn’t belong because it just tastes so nasty,” sophomore Tyrone Bastien said. “I like chicken because it’s just so good and it tastes amazing. I usually order a large chicken and sausage pizza with a stuffed crust.”

In 1962, a man named Sam Panopoulos who was born in Greece decided to move to Canada when he was only 20 years old and this is where he decided to try pineapple on pizza. In a study conducted with 34,000 people in America, 54% of them said no to pineapple on pizza. This means there are way more taste buds out there, we don’t know what they prefer.

“My favorite personalized pizza is supreme but without mushrooms, I like supreme pizza because all the extra vegetables and meats give it more flavor,” sophomore Valerie Spencer said.

You think you would like the sweet taste because it balances out the other items on the pizza. We have plenty of other odd things we put on pizza like anchovies and goat cheese. Who puts fish on a pizza? We also made weird combos before like taco pizza or a breakfast pizza. We have to turn things that are not supposed to be pizza into pizza. Don’t get me wrong, they are both very good pizzas, but so is a thin-crust pineapple pepperoni pizza with a ranch base.

“I don’t think pineapple on pizza should be a thing thinking about it but if I ever tried it, I don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world,” Spencer said. “Otherwise, I don’t think it should be on pizza because it has a sweetness to it and when it is cooked it becomes sour because of the citrus in it, pizza should not be sour it should be savory.”

I just don’t think we should judge a pizza just because it doesn’t sound good. We should all give it a chance. You never know you could end up liking it. I didn’t think pineapple belonged on pizza until I tried it and I was amazed by how the flavors combined. There’s this phrase that I always tell people don’t hate on it before you try it. If you have tried it, and you didn’t like, it then that’s understandable. I encourage everyone to try it and get out of their comfort zone.

“I don’t personally order pineapple on pizza, but I firmly believe in eating what you love,” Beene said.”If pineapple on pizza brings someone joy, I hope they eat it that way.”
