On Nov. 12, Logansport High School was temporarily evacuated due to a fire alarm set off in the Century Career Center during 4th period, with smoke reported to be coming out of Door 12.
At 12:05 p.m. EST, an announcement was made over the intercom system of LHS, repeating the word “Evacuate” and urging students and staff to leave the buildings of both LHS and Century Career Center. In the next five minutes, all students and staff were successfully evacuated from the buildings. No further information about the fire was released to the staff of LHS at the time.
Fifteen minutes later, at approximately 12:20 p.m. EST, the Logansport Fire Department arrived at the scene while LHS students and staff were simultaneously re-entering LHS and the Century Career Center. Firetruck sirens had reportedly been heard by students in the minutes leading up to this.
Students were subsequently held in their 4th period classes until 12:30 p.m. EST, allotting time for the Logansport Fire Department to sweep the Century Career Center. This bumped back the ending bell of third lunch to 1 p.m. EST, but the regular day schedule remained despite this interference, shortening 5th period by eleven minutes.
Magpie staffers swept the Century Career Center during the aftermath of the evacuation and observed that while no classrooms appeared to be disorderly, there was an odor in the shared hallway of the automotive service and welding classrooms. Because no set location of the fire had been publicly announced at this time, it was suspected that the fire started in the previously mentioned welding shop located in the far end of the Century Career Century. The fire was reportedly started by an explosion in this classroom.
However, with recent evidence, it has been concluded that the smoke came from the Health Science classrooms, specifically the Wellness Clinic and that the fire itself was a false alarm, with The Logansport Fire Department reporting that there was smoke, but no fire.
This story will be updated with more information.
