Attorney General Todd Rokita stated he wanted to see President Donald Trump deploy the National Guard to Indianapolis. Rokita stated this in a post on X after a weekend of violence in the city.
In the post, Rokita reposted a crime breakdown from the Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police, which stated that 14 people had been shot and four stabbed over the weekend.
“Another violent weekend in our state’s capital,” Rokita said on X. “It’s shameful that this is a regular occurrence and even more shameful that the leadership here refuses to do anything about it. Hoosiers deserve to feel safe and secure in their communities but instead are stuck living in a never-ending crisis with no end in sight. We need law and order restored.”
President Trump has deployed state National Guard to cities across the country, officially to crack down on crime, homelessness and illegal immigration. However, deployments have mainly targeted Democratic-run cities.
So far, the National Guard has been deployed to Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Memphis and Chicago, with threats to deploy them further to Portland, San Francisco, Baltimore, New York City and Oakland.
The National Guard had already been mobilized in September within the state to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in operations across the state. Officials said the troops would be focused on administrative and logistical tasks and wouldn’t be conducting law enforcement duties.
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett stated that armed troops in the streets wouldn’t make Indianapolis safer, saying the city is not looking for support in the form of soldiers.
“To further our progress in reducing gun violence,” Hogsett said. “What Indianapolis needs is gun laws that make it harder for young people to obtain firearms, police with greater authority to hold problem bars accountable, and for individuals to stop turning to guns to resolve conflict.”
